Surgical Skills & Procedural Stations Course

Master essential surgical techniques for your MRCS Part B OSCE.

Course Overview

This face-to-face, hands-on course develops the surgical and procedural skills required for the MRCS Part B OSCE.

Led by Dr Rashad Raza, the course follows the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) blueprint and focuses on high-yield OSCE stations.

Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Perform core suturing and wound-closure techniques
  • Master one-handed and two-handed knot tying
  • Carry out skin excisions and biopsies safely
  • Perform abscess incision & drainage (I&D) with correct aftercare
  • Use diathermy and instruments safely with good tissue respect
  • Apply aseptic technique and infection-control principles
  • Recognise and manage intraoperative complications

1. Wound Closure & Suturing
  • Simple interrupted, vertical & horizontal mattress sutures
  • Subcuticular & deep dermal suturing
  • Haemostasis and tension management
2. Knot Tying & Instrument Handling
  • One-handed and two-handed knot techniques
  • Safe, efficient use of common surgical instruments
  • Tissue handling with precision and care
3. Surgical Excision & Biopsy
  • Elliptical excision of lipoma/cysts
  • Punch and incisional biopsies
4. Abscess Incision & Drainage (I&D)
  • Local anaesthetic techniques
  • Correct I&D technique with wound packing
  • Post-procedure wound care and follow-up
5. Diathermy, Cryosurgery & Aseptic Technique
  • Basics of electrosurgery and tissue safety
  • Aseptic technique and infection prevention
6. Mock OSCE Stations
  • Timed surgical skills stations
  • Structured, personalised feedback from MRCS-focused trainers
