FRCEM OSCE COURSE
Course Overview
Our FRCEM OSCE Course is an intensive, high-level preparation programme designed for doctors preparing for the FRCEM OSCE examination.
The course is led by senior Emergency Medicine consultants with extensive clinical, teaching and examination preparation experience. It is designed to help candidates refine the advanced communication, clinical reasoning, prioritisation, leadership and decision-making skills expected at FRCEM level.
Unlike basic OSCE preparation, this course focuses on the complexity, judgement and professional maturity required from a senior Emergency Medicine doctor.
Led by Senior Emergency Medicine Consultants
One of the key strengths of the course is direct teaching and feedback from experienced Emergency Medicine consultants.
Candidates benefit from senior-level insight into:
-
How to approach complex OSCE stations
-
How to demonstrate consultant-level thinking
-
How to prioritise safely under pressure
-
How to communicate clearly in challenging situations
-
How to justify clinical decisions
-
How to manage uncertainty
-
How to lead teams effectively
-
How to demonstrate professionalism and sound judgement
The emphasis is on understanding why a particular approach is strong, not simply memorising model answers.

You need to show that you can:
-
Assess the situation rapidly
-
Identify the key priorities
-
Recognise risk
-
Make safe and proportionate decisions
-
Communicate with confidence and clarity
-
Manage complexity
-
Escalate appropriately
-
Support junior colleagues
-
Maintain professionalism
-
Lead effectively
-
Balance patient, staff and departmental needs
The course therefore focuses heavily on developing the structured judgement and maturity expected from a senior Emergency Medicine clinician.
Interactive Practice and Feedback
This is a practical and interactive course.
Candidates will work through exam-style stations, discuss their approach and receive targeted feedback from experienced faculty.
Feedback focuses on:
-
Structure
-
Clinical reasoning
-
Communication
-
Prioritisation
-
Leadership
-
Safety
-
Professionalism
-
Time management
-
Examiner impression
-
Missed opportunities for marks
The aim is to help candidates identify subtle weaknesses that may not be obvious during self-study.
Common Problems We Address
Many FRCEM candidates have excellent knowledge but still underperform because they:
-
Overcomplicate the station
-
Fail to prioritise
-
Give long but unfocused answers
-
Miss the leadership element
-
Do not verbalise their reasoning
-
Communicate at registrar rather than consultant level
-
Fail to address risk
-
Do not close the station effectively
-
Struggle when there is no single “perfect” answer
The course is designed to identify and correct these issues.
Who Should Attend?
This course is suitable for:
-
Doctors preparing for the FRCEM OSCE
-
Emergency Medicine registrars
-
Senior clinical fellows
-
Candidates sitting the exam for the first time
-
Candidates who have previously been unsuccessful
-
Doctors who want to improve their communication and leadership performance
-
Candidates who want senior consultant feedback before the examination
Our Approach
We focus on four core principles:
Understand the station.
Prioritise the problem.
Communicate like a senior clinician.
Demonstrate safe clinical judgement.
Candidates are encouraged to develop adaptable frameworks rather than memorised scripts.
This allows them to respond more confidently when the examination presents unfamiliar or unexpected scenarios.
Why This Course?
The FRCEM OSCE is an assessment of how you function as a senior Emergency Medicine clinician.
Our course therefore aims to bridge the gap between knowing Emergency Medicine and demonstrating senior-level Emergency Medicine performance under examination conditions.
With structured practice, challenging stations and feedback from senior Emergency Medicine consultants, candidates can refine the skills needed to perform with greater clarity, confidence and consistency.
Important Disclaimer
This is an independent FRCEM OSCE preparation course.
The stations and teaching materials are developed for educational purposes around relevant Emergency Medicine competencies and commonly tested OSCE themes.
They are not official RCEM examination stations and should not be interpreted as genuine recalled examination content.
The course is not produced, endorsed or affiliated with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. Candidates should continue to review the current RCEM curriculum, relevant national guidance and appropriate educational resources as part of their preparation.
