FRCEM Course UK: SBA and OSCE

The Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM) is the senior emergency medicine exam in the UK. It has two parts, the FRCEM SBA and the FRCEM OSCE, which you can take in either order. This page summarises the official exam facts and the Kung Medics FRCEM courses.

Kung Medics runs a consultant-led FRCEM OSCE course in Manchester. Kung Medics is an independent training provider. It is not part of, or endorsed by, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM).

To apply you need a primary medical qualification accepted by the GMC, full registration with a licence to practise, and completed MRCEM or its equivalent, plus the emergency medicine experience RCEM sets for your route. Your first FRCEM exam must be within 7 years of completing MRCEM, and you must pass both FRCEM exams within 7 years of passing the first. Frequently asked questions

What are the parts of FRCEM?

FRCEM has two exams, the FRCEM SBA and the FRCEM OSCE. You can take them in either order. Passing both gives you FRCEM.

Is there still a separate FRCEM QIP or critical appraisal exam?

Not on RCEM's current FRCEM page. Quality improvement, research and management are tested in the FRCEM SBA, and critical appraisal is a station in the FRCEM OSCE.

Where is the FRCEM OSCE held?

RCEM runs the FRCEM OSCE in London. The FRCEM SBA is taken at computer test centres worldwide.

How many attempts do I get at FRCEM?

RCEM allows 4 attempts at each FRCEM exam, and may grant one further attempt case by case.
